The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions carry us through our lives so we don’t have to stop and think about it every time we wipe our ass or start a car.
It is, in my opinion, an important thing to be aware of. But I really think that any time you are on autopilot, you are a slave to your own thoughts and actions. This is a big lie. Every action you take should have a purpose. Otherwise you will just be a person who is constantly trying to run away from the fact that they dont have a purpose and are running around in a meaningless life.
We all have this “autopilot”, but it’s not really an autopilot. It’s a state of mind. When you think about it, you are actually in a state of mind. That state of mind is what allows you to think, learn, and act. That’s the state of mind that you are in when you are on autopilot.
Think of the above as the state of mind you’re in when you are on autopilot. Now think about how you can use this to your advantage.
Business analytics are pretty much the same thing as the state of mind youre in when you are on autopilot. For instance, if you were at a party and you looked around at the guests, would you see how many of the people at the party were wearing business suits? Probably not. Yet, if you know how many of the guests you know are wearing business suits, you can work out how much profit they’re making.
And that’s the other thing business analytics can do. It can give you a real-time view of what youre doing on autopilot. We’ve got a lot of data in our business analytics dashboard. This data lets us work out what we’re doing right, what we’re doing wrong, and what we should change.
Well, its great to have a dashboard that lets you see the profit youre making (and the number of people that youre making it), but it is also great to have the information of the various things youre doing on autopilot, too. How many suits is a party guest wearing at a wedding? How many suits are people buying at the mall? How many suits are people wearing at the office? These are all relevant questions.
In short, it is good to know what you are doing and what you are not doing. But it is also good to have a tool that lets you see exactly who does what. Business analytics lets you see how your company is doing in the real world. It lets you see what you are doing right, what you are doing wrong, and what you should change.
At a recent company meeting, Google VP of Engineering, Josh Balogh, said “This is one of the things we are doing in Google that is going to change our ability to make business decisions. We are going to be able to use this to predict which people are going to do what.” He went on to say that he wanted companies to use business analytics “to make sure that they are actually the right people” for a certain task.
I’m starting to suspect that this is, in fact, one of the things that Google actually does that impacts its business. I mean, I know it sounds a little scary, but it’s actually pretty cool. If you are in business and you can’t make a decision without consulting Google, then you have no business.
