I have been getting more and more frequent emails about the “Self-Awareness” or “The Three Levels of Self-Awareness”, and I’m pretty sure it is a bit of a trend in 2014. But, it’s not a bad thing.
I think most of us have those thoughts when we drive down the street. Whether it is the traffic, the people we pass on the road, or whatever, we feel the need to constantly check our mirrors or the GPS to see if we have enough time to change lanes. We are so busy noticing things that we forget that we’re also making a conscious effort to pay attention to them. This is one of the reasons the self-awareness approach is so useful.
The self-awareness approach is not a bad thing. It is very useful for many people. I know this because I use it to some extent myself. It helps me pay attention to things that I might have forgotten about. For instance, I have a habit of not paying attention to my GPS while driving. It is a habit that I almost never break. Yet, this habit has made me so distracted that I have almost hit a woman who was on the side of the road.
This is what makes me think that the self-awareness approach to procrastination might not really help me. I’m not sure if it helps me in general or just for my own needs. I suppose it could help me if I knew I was using my GPS to distract myself, but the truth is that I don’t know if that will help. If you tell yourself that you’re trying to get more done, then it tends to get you more done.
I think the real problem for many people is that they are so used to getting things done and getting their work done that they forget there is a difference between “getting things done” and “doing work”. If you really think about it, it’s really no different. If you want your work done, you can set your goals to get that done. If you want to accomplish something, you can set your goal to accomplish that.
